AC Repair or Replace in Thane: The Cost Test That Decides It

A seven-year-old split with a failed capacitor is obviously worth repairing. A nine-year-old split with a seized compressor usually is not. Between those two there is a wide band where the decision needs arithmetic rather than instinct, and this is the arithmetic.

The ratio test

Take the quoted repair cost and divide it by the price of a comparable new unit, installed. Then add the age factor.

Under 30% and under six years old: repair. The remaining life comfortably exceeds the cost.

30–50%: repair only if the rest of the machine is sound — clean coils, no prior gas work, no corrosion on the outdoor chassis. Otherwise replace.

Over 50%: replace. At that point you are funding a rebuild of someone else’s depreciated asset.

Concretely: a ₹6,499 compressor replacement on a unit that cost ₹38,000 installed is 17% — but on a nine-year-old unit with a rusted chassis it is 17% spent on a machine with two summers left.

Component by component

Two repairs to the same system within eighteen months is the clearest replace signal there is. It is not about the individual bills; it is that the machine has entered a failure phase.

The running-cost argument nobody quotes

A 2017 3-star fixed-speed split draws roughly 1.5 units an hour. A 2026 5-star inverter of the same capacity settles near 1.0. Over eight hours a night for 150 nights, that gap is around 600 units — ₹5,400 to ₹7,200 a season at current Mumbai tariffs.

Which means a "working fine" old unit can cost you more each year than the repair you are avoiding. If your unit is over eight years old, fixed-speed, and running nightly, the honest comparison is not repair versus purchase. It is repair plus another three seasons of higher bills versus purchase.

The cases where repair is clearly right

Repair without agonising if the unit is under five years old and the fault is electrical rather than sealed-system. Capacitors, fan motors and PCBs are consumables in this climate. A board failure at year four does not mean the machine is dying.

Also repair if the installation was done well and the outdoor unit is sheltered. A clean, shaded, correctly piped unit routinely runs twelve years in Thane. Physical condition of the outdoor chassis tells you more about remaining life than the age on the invoice.

The cases where replacement wins

Replace when any of these is true: the outdoor chassis is rusted through at the base, the unit has had two gas charges in two years, the compressor has failed on a unit over seven years old, or a replacement coil costs more than a third of a new machine.

Also replace if you are moving from a window unit to a split anyway, or if the room has been reconfigured — a new installation is the moment to correct tonnage, which a repair never will.

What to do with the old unit

Ask whether the installer will take it. Most will, and it has scrap value in the copper and aluminium. Get the removal, the outdoor bracket disposal and the pipe capping included in the new installation quote — otherwise you pay for it as an extra on the day.

And keep the commissioning sheet from the new installation. It is the document that makes the next warranty claim a formality rather than an argument.
