Why Your AC Smells Musty — and What Actually Removes the Smell
The smell comes back a fortnight after you clean the filter because the filter was never the problem. The growth is on the wet surfaces behind it.
It arrives in the first minute of running and fades once the room cools, which is exactly why people learn to live with it. That first-minute smell is the unit blowing air across a wet, colonised coil. It is not a fragrance problem and no spray fixes it.
What is actually growing, and where
An evaporator coil runs at 6–10°C and stays wet for hours after the unit stops. In Mumbai’s monsoon humidity, that damp film combined with dust is an ideal surface for mould and bacteria. The growth sits on the coil fins, on the blower wheel, and in the drain tray.
Your filter catches coarse dust before it reaches the coil, which is why rinsing it changes nothing about the smell. The surfaces that smell are behind it, and they are wet.
The three smells and what each means
| Smell | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Damp, musty, like wet cloth | Mould on coil and blower | Foam or deep dismantle service |
| Sour, like old milk | Bacterial film in the drain tray and pipe | Drain flush plus coil clean |
| Sharp, chemical, plasticky | Overheating electrical component or burnt insulation | Stop using; electrical inspection |
The third one is not a cleaning issue. If the smell is acrid rather than earthy, switch the unit off at the isolator and get it inspected — a burning capacitor or a scorched terminal is a fire risk.
Why sprays make it worse
An aerosol "AC cleaner" sprayed into the intake coats the visible surfaces with fragrance and a biocide film. It does not reach the back of the coil, the blower blades or the drain tray. Two weeks later the growth returns, now under a layer of product.
Some sprays also leave a residue that traps dust faster, which shortens the interval before the next clean. We spend a fair amount of time undoing them.
What a proper clean involves
A foam jet service (₹649) applies a foaming cleaner to the coil, lets it dwell, and flushes it with water while the unit drains. It removes growth from the coil face and the accessible part of the blower.
A deep dismantle service (₹1,349) removes the indoor unit from the wall so the coil, blower wheel and tray can be washed separately and the drain line flushed. For a unit with a persistent smell, this is the service that actually ends it — the blower wheel is where most of the colonised dust sits, and it cannot be cleaned properly in place.
Preventing the return
Four habits make a real difference in this climate.
- Run the fan-only mode for ten minutes before switching off, especially at night. It dries the coil and removes the wet surface growth needs.
- Do not switch off at the plug immediately after cooling; use the remote so the unit completes its cycle.
- Service before the monsoon, not after. A clean coil entering June has far less to feed on.
- Keep the drain tray clear — standing water in the tray is the source of the sour smell.
None of this is a substitute for cleaning, but it roughly doubles the interval between services in a humid flat.
When the smell is coming from the drain, not the coil
If the smell is strongest near the wall where the drain exits, or in the room below, the growth is in the drain line rather than the coil. A drain flush with the tray cleaned by hand is the fix, and it is quick — but it is a separate step that a coil-only service will miss.
Ask for it explicitly. "The smell is at the drain" tells the technician more than "the AC smells".
Key takeaways
- The smell is mould and bacteria on the wet coil, blower and drain tray.
- Rinsing filters will not change it — the growth is behind them.
- Aerosol sprays mask it and trap more dust.
- Persistent smell needs a deep dismantle service, not a foam wash.
- Fan-only for ten minutes before switching off slows the return.
Frequently asked questions
Is the musty smell harmful?
It is a sign of mould and bacterial growth being blown into the room, which is uncomfortable for anyone with asthma or allergies. It is worth fixing for that reason alone, quite apart from the smell.
How much does it cost to fix an AC smell?
A foam jet service is ₹649 and handles mild cases. A persistent smell usually needs a deep dismantle service at ₹1,349, which is the level that cleans the blower wheel properly.
Can I use vinegar or bleach in the drain tray?
Diluted vinegar in the tray is safe and helps. Bleach is harsher on plastics and rubber seals and we would not recommend it inside a unit you plan to keep for years.
